Sembilan is the Malay word for nine, and nine granite islands gave the Similan archipelago its name. The count is now outdated. Thailand gazetted Mu Ko Similan National Park in 1982; Ko Bon and Ko Tachai were absorbed in 1998, bringing the total to eleven.
